DOB appx 5/1/08. DSH turkish van marked neutered male. Ching been to an eye specialist & we are working hard to clear up his weepy eye. He has been diagnosed with a (very painful) "corneal sequestrum"...and he's very used to his eye drops now! His eye drops are pretty expensive, he is now on 3 different ones. Luckily we get 2 of them almost at cost.

Here's Ching's history: In February 2010, Ching went to the vet - there is some foreign object in his right eye which we think is the source of all the tears and redness. He is not sick, but the eye is irritated. On 3/2/10 the vet put him under to try removing the foreign object. It could not be removed so we were directed to put ointment in his eye 3 times a day, the vet thinks maybe it will flush out on its own. If not we will have to take him to an opthomologist.

New update: we took him to the opthalmologist, who put him on 3 different eyedrops 4 times a day (whew) and the redness subsided. This specialist also removed some of the object there in the office but couldn't get it all, and hopes the rest will flush out. As of June 2010, it did flush out which is very, very rare and Ching is extremely lucky he avoided surgery and our foster mom dodged a $1000 surgery cost!!

Early 2012 we took Ching in for his 6-month visit (he must go twice a year so the eye specialist can status this sequestrum (iron deposit) in his eye. The specialist mentioned Ching's eyelid seems to be turning under (entropian) and he might need surgery to correct the eyelid, this is an additional problem they will need to look at during his twice a year visit.

UPDATE July 2012: Ching still has woes with this right eye! He got an eye ulcer (a white spot) so his foster mom rushed him to the eye specialist. Luckily we caught it early and he will be okay. However during the eye exam, the eye specialist found some oddities in Ching's lower eyelids and he removed some strange black debris which was deep in the lower lid. Ching's eye was sensitive afterward, and he wouldn't open it for a day, but is much better now and he is a happier kitty :)

The specialist did mention the option of removing this very troublesome right eye. It's something to think about and will be very expensive.

UPDATE OCT 1, 2012: Ching's eye has flared up twice in the last 4 weeks and is extremely painful for him. We have made the decision to remove his right eye, it has been a problem since he was 4 weeks old and has some congenital issues on top of having the sequestrum. Poor Ching has been dealing with eyedrops all his short 4 year life, and flare ups like the one we just had which suddenly had his eye glued shut with gooey tears and major inflammation is such a drag for him, he is uncomfortable and his eye seems to be getting worse (flare ups are more frequent).

We have scheduled the removal for Tuesday, October 9.

UPDATE: Oct 10: I was just looking at Ching's picture where his right eye looks so "normal" - I think this was taken 2-3 years ago, long before the really big problems started. Looking back at his records, we had to take him to the eye specialist when he was just about 5 weeks old, for that right eye. Ugh! It's been a problem his WHOLE life! Poor guy.

So, now it's gone. The specialist quote was $600+ and we just couldn't afford that. So now, yes it's removed, by a wonderful vet for $280!! Lucky for foster mom Mona, the vet just bought a practice right around the corner from her house. (he and his wife have a practice in Palm Bay also). Dr. Paul and Dr. Jen bought Clearlake Animal Hospital in Cocoa, and Dr. Paul removed Ching's right eye. He also did a dental for no charge for us, while Ching was under anesthesia (Ching was due for one). That was so nice of Dr. Paul!

He and his team have remodeled the place and it's really nice. It's nice to know high quality pet care for an affordable price is now in Cocoa!

Since Ching still has stitches and a little inflammation from the surgery, we will post a picture after all this heals a bit more.

Dr. Paul did say that Ching may need two molars removed, his bottom rear molars are under a "watch" now. Other than that his mouth looked good!
