Description:
This really nice kitty Mona just took in, he is named Van Gogh because of his missing right ear flap!

Van Gogh was at a 7-11 and some awesome folks are taking care of the cats who eat beside the building. They have started fixing all the kitties - the other kitties are feral but this guy is not! He's a gentle giant.

He is also special because he's FIV+ which is NOT a big deal as long as the kitty is not aggressive (he is not) and is fixed (he is). Van Gogh was already fixed, so someone used to own him and tossed him like trash, probably resulting in him getting attacked by other cats and getting FIV and also getting those earmites from other kitties on the street.

Those of us in PAWS and other local rescues who foster in our homes do mix FIV with negative cats. As long as no one is aggressive, and everyone is fixed, it does not pass from one cat to the other. Several foster moms test every cat in the home each year and this has been done for years, we can prove this virus is not contagious thru food, water, or litter. Cornell University did a study, also, and found the same thing.

His ears had mites but those are gone! We are cleaning them almost every day to get the wax out - kitties who have mites overproduce wax to try to protect the ear which is being attacked. It takes awhile to get all that wax out. And the little ears are sensitive to poking and prodding with qtips!

Finally we got the pictures - you can see his right ear is just a little stubby ear flap and his left is folded over.

UPDATE!! we just noticed the folded over left ear is NATURAL -  we thought it was possibly damaged by mites, it's hard to see on a black cat when the black ear is right next to the fur... now we have figured it out -- this guy is a Scottish Fold!  The right ear flap is gone but what is still there looks like it would have also been folded.

Van Gogh probably got into a fight on the street because his ears folded meant he couldn't hear other cats or competition for food (raccoons) as well as a cat with ears up would be able to hear. We also noted as we looked at him closer, his left ear is eartipped like the stray & feral cats get when the are on the street and get trapped / fixed / vaccinated. So someone in the past has had him to the vet already..this is why the  left ear is cropped off in a straight line.

Van Gogh is updated with vaccines and ready to adopt!  He seems to be passive with other cats, and we plan to introduce our gentle dog to him soon.
