Mr. Fluffy Pants has quite the story. He is a Persian - yes a purebred from a breeder. The family who adopted him at weaning had turned him in at the county shelter after 3 months. They said they were unable to littertrain him. Odd, because he uses the pan for us!!!!
Mr. Fluffy Pants however, did have some pretty awful diarrhea. We think the people just didn't realize there was a problem with the loose stool (hmmmm how could you miss it)...what would happen, even here, is the little guy would use the pan and it would get so messy he would then go outside the pan.
His poor little bum was so incredibly sore after 3 months of diarrhea that we couldn't even lift his tail or bathe him without him screaming in pain from the burn.
We treated him for the most common parasites, and even put him on special foods. No luck....
Our vet prescribed another medicine to reduce inflammation in his gut (good idea, because by now his little insides were probably quite irritated). And we agreed to start him on an intestinal diet called i/d made by Science Diet.
His poops improved slightly but were still messy. And those who have had Persians know what a real mess this can be.
Finally the foster mom, Mona, noticed his poops had little flecks in them, that's a sure-fire food allergy. So off to the pet store to buy grain-free food.
Well, well, well....yep our little guy has had some firm poops probably the first time since he weaned. Is that sad or what? It took us from Nov 24, when we pulled him from the county shelter, till December 7 to rule out the most common problems! We lucked out because he's now much firmer even though his little gut is probably still inflamed and will take awhile to completely settle down. We will be following up with the vet in any case.
So, it's only now we can put him up for adoption knowing what is needed - a grain-free diet. Please note this is a Persian which is a cat who needs to go to a home where the owners understand how to care for a Persian and their fur. His adoption fee is $200.
We will get more pictures soon!
Update: This little guy is still on a roller coaster with his poor little gut. Typically when a cat has had issues like this the poo is good one day, bad the next. Same thing is happening here. He feels much better though, we can tell. He's not crying (yes, sadly he would sit in his crate and cry and stand almost all the time because it hurt so bad to sit. We let him out (after removing all food from the foster room) and he ran around and played for a half day...for the first time out of a cage since mid-November when he was turned in at the county.
Update Dec 14: Mr F.P. went back to the vet yesterday to report in and get his little bum shaved so things won't be quite so messy with all that fur. He is doing much, much better on the grain-free but occasionally still has some loose stool that surprises him and he goes uncontrollably in his cage. Since he has gained almost a pound the vet told us to increase his medication (a mild antibiotic which also reduces gut inflammation, called Flagyl or Metronidazole..."Metro" for short). We'll keep you posted!
Update Dec 19: Two days completely firm, no accidents!
Dec 20 - Three days firm, no accidents! Woo hoo!
