Description:

She was found on the street at about age 5 weeks, and brought to a PAWS foster mom. Jackie is a beautiful brown tortoiseshell (see the mix of orange and brown in her coat) and she is a medium hair so likely has some Maine Coon in there somewhere.

Jackie had major birth defects in both eyes, the lenses and corneas didn't separate correctly and her left eye had a horrible case of glaucoma on top of all that. The right eye was a little smaller than normal (not much smaller, though) but she has sight and does not require any special drops in the right eye.

So for most of her life so far, her left eye was too big, and painful, and her right eye was a tad too small. That never stopped her from playing and being a typical kitten - super sweet, too, despite all the pain (headaches) from glaucoma.

The week of September 26 her left (glaucoma) eye ruptured - it was an ugly sight - and we had to rush her for a vet visit, then rush to arrange for it to be removed. It was very painful for her all this time with the glaucoma, special drops, etc. and now it's gone. She is much better off without the troublesome eye! She got thru the post-op meds -- she was on antibiotics to prevent infection, and pain meds (morphine) for the first few days. Her stitches are now removed and the eye area is still a bit tender but healing nicely.

We named her Jackie - after all, there are so many one-eyed Jacks, we figure we would name a one-eyed female Jackie!!

She has been around very young children (ages 2 thru 8) and 3 dogs, and a handful of cats...so she's ready for anything. Jackie is extremely playful but gentle about it, if she plays or nips at your fingers she doesn't break the skin. She is so adorable and loves to be cuddled on your lap.

We will get new pictures with her stitches out. The current pictures are before & after her surgery, you can see the different sizes of her eyes.

After the surgery, of course, she only can see out of her right eye. Her sight seems to be normal, she jumps and plays like all the other kittens would, so we think she has pretty much normal vision in that eye.

The vet bill is in, it was $450 to remove the eye! Donations very welcome, thank you!
