This little guy is a purebred who was dumped, with his purebred papers, at the county shelter. The owner had dumped him before then come back for him which is horribly confusing to the cat. So this time we grabbed him before that could occur! (evidently this person does this constantly with their cats at the county shelter, dump and reclaim)
He was VERY stressed because the first two times he was dumped, this little guy was barely 1 year old. The shelter called out to rescues for him because they didn't want to have him go thru the same thing again, where the owner came back to get him and would only dump him again. So, we took him and we later placed him with a family...... but they returned him saying he was mean.
He was again very upset and every time we approached with a towel he got more upset and would strike out. We figured out someone had wrapped him in a towel and held him down to trim nails, groom, etc. So no towels!
We let him rest and he very slowly trusted us over a week's time. He was caged and we had a very difficult road, but in the end we had figured out that every time we groomed him or touched his back he went nuts and growled and lashed out.
We realized he needed a vet visit to a chiropractor. We took him to see Dr. Beth Ferris at Coastal Animal Hospital in Rockledge. Her diagnosis is consistent with extreme muscle spasms due to his kneecaps popping off (what the vets call luxating patellas). The muscles and joints are affected up in the pelvis and into the lower back from this.
So Muffin got an adjustment from head to tail, and is on some strong anti-inflammatories. Plus Glucosamine supplement. It's like he's a new guy. We can pet him and comb him somewhat. We don't push it because he may have a habit of lashing out. So we want to try to break that habit for sure.
UPDATE: Muffin is doing great and is doing well on his anti-inflammatories and has only required two trips to the chiropractor.
