Description: Punky was at our local county shelter, where they have started using "return to field" far too much.
RTF is what shelters usually do in rare cases for a tame cat, putting it back on the street where it was found as stray (now fixed and vaccinated of course).
So, the Brevard County shelter is doing this a lot and small rescues (without the $4.8M budget) are stepping in to take the cats, because we really don't want a bunch of tame cats on the street!! Our shelter tends to do this right after a kitty has served "stray time"....they fix, vaccinate, eartip and plan to put back on the street.
We have a process that sometimes works, where the shelter rescue coordinator contacts us to let us know there are RTF cats. We then collaborate with mutitple rescues and everyone steps up to take what they can. (note that most of us are doing this in our private homes, and are constantly having to take "just one more").
Just before Hurricane Irma hit, we get notice about 7 RTFs. That's a lot just 4 days before a hurricane, we are already hard at work preparing our homes and trying to figure out game plans .... we posted to FB and a very nice foster family stepped up to take them. Due to paperwork snafus, we pulled 4 and Punky was one of them.
The shelter had her listed at 4 months (due to her weighing 4 pounds, kittens grow an average of a pound a month). However, the shelter did not look in her mouth showing her adult teeth....yes, she is a petite kitty.... and about 1 year old (we originally thought she was two but getting a better look at her teeth, and another vet opinion, we think closer to 1).
As we all know, kittens place much easier than adults, so this was a bit of disheartening news...we wish more adults got placed as quickly as kittens....
In any case Punky is quite the spunky girl -- she is VERY active! Punky is also not spayed yet so we will be scheduling that in the next few days!
